Calling all Parents of Teenagers

Sometimes being the parents of teenagers can be a rather stressful job. Do you feel at the end of your tether sometimes? Would you like the chance to meet once or twice with other parents for mutual support? Emmanuel Chapel would like to offer you the chance to do this, maybe over a glass of wine (or coffee) have a natter with folk in a
similar position.

Do you have a problem thinking what to dish up for meals each day with the ever rising cost of food? Depending on demand we would like to put on a course to help you cook well balanced meals at a reasonable price.

Christmas Crackers

This year’s Christmas Cracker event will take place on Tuesday, 14th December in the usual place outside the Co-op in Crow Lane.

We are hoping to have the school choirs and band again to sing and play carols for everyone to join in and there will be Christmas music from the North Bristol PA Hire. Free mulled wine and mince pies, will be there for everyone and of course, Santa will arrive with his helpers to sit in his grotto and greet the children.

Please make a note of the date and come along. You don’t have to be young to join in the fun – only young at heart!

News from the Churches

During the past few months we have heard a lot about how, as a nation, we need to cut back on our expenses as we've been spending money we did not have.
It got me thinking as to what are the important things in life that we really cannot do without and which are just luxuries. All of us no doubt would put friends, family, home, clean water, food and air as the basics but then I may get as many different answers as there are people in Henbury/Brentry as to what are luxuries and what are 'rights'.
Let's all ponder before we spend vast sums on each other at Christmas that just maybe your son, daughter, mum, dud, sister, brother, friend etc, may consider time spent with them more valuable than the latest 'must have' material gift.
As a Christian I believe that God actually saw this 2000 years ago when He considered the best gift He could give was actually Himself, in the form of Jesus Christ who is the image of God in the flesh.

Christmas Message from James Stevenson, St.Mary's

They say all the shopping has stripped Christmas of its message about a Saviour. Or perhaps its just that the dream of a white Christmas is really more appealing than the idea of a God who loves us and wants to live in our hearts? I wish that everyone would consider the nativity scene for all its grace and truth, but if the baby is to be ‘thrown out’ of our society’s consciousness, lets take a look at the bathwater that’s going with it.

Away, behind the manger in the corner of the living room stands a figure whose choices crash into this community two thousand years later. According to his culture, Joseph had every right to abandon his fiancée, Mary, yet his faithfulness ensured a safe and stable home for her and Jesus as the family grew. From what I hear and see, there are quite a few single parents struggling through life in this part of Bristol. Whilst each story is different, would it be too controversial to suggest that we suffer a shortage of Josephs in Henbury?

Parents, Grandparents, Carers all, when faced with the nativity scene this Christmas, if you find it difficult to explain the significance of the baby in the manger, why not point out to your boys the figure called Joseph? It may seem a small act, but if a new generation of fathers grow wanting to be honourable like Joseph, we might begin to turn the tide of lost and unloved teenagers in our community.

Maybe, then, the relevance of this bathwater tells us there’s something in the baby…

Coffee morning at Emmanuel Chapel

Did you know there's a corner of Henbury where, every Wednesday the temperature is a good 1 degree hotter from all the chatter taking place at Emmanuel's coffee morning?

We have been running non stop now for about four years and it's open to anyone who would like to break up their routine between 10am and 12 noon.

You don't have to be a church goer to attend and the subject of conversation is very varied. For those of you who do have a particular world view come and share it. What you will find is a willingness to listen.

If you just want a cup of coffee it's only 35p and you will get to know other folk from this great community.

News from the Churches

As I write these notes we are entering the second week of what the Christian church knows as Lent.


Down through the years this is often seen as a period of reflection, and it is certainly a good thing to stop and consider the direction our lives are taking.

With the near collapse of the banking system in the West many people are coming to realise how shallow life can be when all we have are material hopes and objectives.

When we base our whole life on the accumulation of wealth or the gathering of posessions it is surprising how quickly this can lead to greed and a self centered attitude.

Why not use this period of Lent to reflect on the spiritual side of life. For me that means faith in Jesus Christ as God's Son and as we reach Easter again all Christians will contemplate His death and celebrate His resurrection.

How about considering going to your local church this Easter and being part of the celebrations.

"I live in Henbury and I am quite disappointed to find out there has been a meeting at Wesley college on the 28th June, as I didn't receive notice of this meeting until 29th June and I suspect a lot of people didn't get their Henbury and Brentry newsletter until then. What was the point of the meeting if we don't know about it? I feel our opinions were not wanted or we would have had proper notice of this meeting, but of course it’s now too late." - One very Annoyed Resident of Henbury.

We are sorry that the last newsletter was delayed by two weeks, and as we mentioned on the feedback page, it was due to technological issues beyond our control. We feel it important to clarify that this newsletter is run by volunteers and in no way represents either the Community Council or Bristol City Council, although members of both participate and help to fund its production. Also, as passionate members of the community, we more than most welcome your comments and opinion on developments in Henbury and Brentry. We recognise the importance of dialogue between individuals, public bodies and private enterprise and want the newsletter to act as a forum for it. News From the Churches

Communication is very important in our daily lives and the way we do it can vary in so many ways; texts, e-mail, media, facebook, letters, stories to name a few, not forgetting good old fashioned talking. This newsletter is also a great addition in our community in helping us stay informed.
Jesus Christ was a terrific communicator, sometimes by His words and often by His actions and the amazing thing is, He is still influencing people 2000 years after His death. A good example He gave was when He washed His disciples feet, and also His ability to listen.
Let's think about what we are saying to the people we associate with today. Are people pleased to see us or glad to see the back of us?

New Kingsland United Reformed Church

The foundation stone for the present building was laid on 3rd April 1954. However for some two years before this, the Church had been meeting in a wooden hut (at the side of the present Church), which was destroyed by fire in October 1991. Our Church is named after Kingsland Congregational Chapel, Kingsland Road, Bristol, which was badly damaged during the last war. The congregation there agreed on the sale of their premises with the proceeds invested in a Free Church at Henbury, hence 'New Kingsland'. When the Congregational Church of England and Wales and the Presbyterian Church united in 1972 New Kingsland Congregational Church became New Kingsland United Reformed Church. For the last five years we have been without a Minister, prior to that we shared a pastorate with Thornbury URC for ten years. Our numbers are small -seven Church members, two elders, one non-serving elder and seven adherents. Our average congregation on a Sunday is ten. Our Church is situated in Passage Road (The same bit of Passage Road as Henbury Social Club!) .
