A small trench measuring 4 x 2 metres has been opened up in the field in order to locate the position and nature of the Roman road which runs from Shirehampton to Gloucester, sections of which have been picked up in the Henbury school playing fields.
To date, however, work has been somewhat slower than anticipated largely due to a combination of inclement weather, the Christmas break and dark evenings but it is hoped with spring approaching that progress will soon be made.
The removal of the turf has revealed post-Medieval top-soil and a small collection of associated finds. These include 19th century clay pipe stems and one incomplete clay pipe bowl, other finds include some post-Medieval pottery but nothing of significance as yet.
